Montague Retreat Center

Legacy. Community. Culture.

From its settlement in 1798 as a rugged New England farm, to the illustrious Montague Farm commune (1968-2002), to Zen Peacemakers (2002-2011), 177 Ripley Road seems to inspire magic. Its legacy is multifaceted: community building, spirituality, art, environmentalism, and activism. Montague Retreat Center's mission is to extend that legacy by making this unique place available to the public for private functions, workshops, cultural events, and overnight retreats. The Great Hall, our stunning, geothermal assembly space, is currently available for day or evening use and our tented stone patio is perfect for large functions. We also offer on-site accommodations to our Retreat Center guests.

Let our rich history of simplicity, courage, vision and beauty inspire your big day. Our lush Ceremony Circle, nestled up to the apple orchard, sits beneath one of the oldest maple groves in Massachusetts, with a stunning view across the valley. Our gorgeous Stone Patio features a permanent 40’ x 50’ reception tent and a 75’ long stone bench retaining wall. Our elegant, yet rustic, Great Hall Barn features chestnut beams, bamboo floors, lots of glass and geothermal cooling. Our VIP suite, in a wing of our Great Hall Barn, offers a place for you and your wedding party to get ready and relax.

We recently had our wedding at Montague Retreat Center and it was incredible. Jason and his team allowed us to create a 3 day magical wedding. Our friends and family would not stop raving over how unique and personalized the wedding was. Montague allowed us to create a wedding that was a representation of us as a couple and our relationship. I love the venue and cannot wait to attend one of their hosted events.

Our time at the Montague Retreat Center was nothing short of magical. From the moment we arrived, we were embraced by the warmth and genuine care of the staff—especially Jason and Coco, whose support was not only professional but deeply personal, and it made all the difference.

The venue itself is absolutely stunning. We held our outdoor ceremony beneath a birch arch in the field surrounded by the woods, and as if on cue, the sun broke through just as we began to place the rings. It felt like nature itself was blessing the moment. The setting is peaceful and soul stirring, perfect for reflection, celebration, and connection.

They allowed us to use outside vendors for our dinner which was important to us since we had previously chosen Hillside Organic Catering and dinner was held on a tented stone patio that had a castle-feel, overlooking the mountain. The cake cutting, ceremony and dancing were held in the historic barn which comes pre-lit with string lights for perfect ambience so we hardly needed to decorate the space.

There are several lodging options on the property, which makes it easy to accommodate a group. We stayed in the Mountain View Suite, which was both cozy and spacious, offering incredible views of the full moon and a surrounding mountain scape.

If you’re looking for a place that radiates peace, beauty, and a sense of something greater, Montague Retreat Center is it. We left feeling grounded, inspired, and incredibly grateful to embark upon our journey in married life. This venue was the perfect start.

Dear Jason,

We wanted to take a moment and thank you again for the exceptional care you showed us at Maddy and Hunter’s Wedding. From the monet you became aware tha my 100 year old father used a walker, you made it a priority to deliver him safely.  You walked him from the car to a table at the reception, you showed him how to enter the lodge from the back, you personally placed him in the elevator for the disabled, you directed us to the table to which we were assigned, and you helped us to exit the lot at the end of the night.  Through each of these interactions you were gracious and kind and left us both feeling that we were in loving hands.  We would like you to know how grateful we feel.  And we would like anyone who is considering the retreat center to know, especially those who might require help with special needs, the high level of assistance that you and the center provide.

Wishing you the very best for all that lies ahead!

Warm regards,

Haim & Raphael

“The Perfect Day

My husband & I got married at the Montague Retreat Center last October (2023) and it was truly the best day of our lives. Not only is the venue itself absolutely beautiful, but the staff that works there are so extremely helpful & professional. Leading up to the wedding, I called Jason constantly and was able to discuss everything from the rehearsal to the big day. I never once felt like I was a bother & continually felt supported throughout the whole experience. I could not recommend this place (or the amazing staff) enough. We are so very grateful for them!”

“We cannot overstate how amazing the staff at MRC were in helping us plan our wedding and making the day of go so seamlessly! They were so communicative and accommodating. And the venue is breathtakingly gorgeous! Highly recommended!”

“I cannot explain how great of a choice MRC was for our wedding. The venue is gorgeous, the amenities were wonderful, but the real selling point were the people. Jackie was a dream to work with and when something went pretty majorly wrong she immediately did everything she could to make it write and fixed the issue beyond our satisfaction. Also, if you're like me and don't like venues saying "you have to use OUR caterer" don't worry. Wheelhouse is the best caterer I have ever interacted with. Kind, professional, and easily at the top of the game. I generally don't give perfect reviews, but our wedding was perfect and MRC was a strong reason why.”

“We had a fusion Indian/Haitian wedding at MRC and we honestly could not imagine getting married anywhere else! Although our initial plans were to have an outdoor ceremony in the beautiful ceremony circle - mother nature had other plans (rain!) and with excellent guidance and flexibility from Kellsey and Jackie we moved to our Plan B. Which turned out to be what we expected and so much more! The barn is beautiful and was an equally incredible location to get married in.

Jackie and Kellsey constantly went above and beyond for all of our celebrations (and we had many!) and were genuinely kind and calming to be around all weekend. The other bonus was the venue's collaboration with Wheelhouse catering. They took our very specific ask of creating a fusion Indian and Haitian menu and delivered more than anything we could ever expect!”
